Add color and energy with spring accessories

Celebrating the colors of spring

How into Spring are you? I know from conversations on the Tips & Teasers Facebook page that not everyone has switched their closets yet. Those white pants in this photo? They’re corduroys! And I’m not leaving the house without two more layers, you’ll see.

We have to be patient as spring is like that: cool, warm, then warm, then hot, then cool. The Serenity Prayer just popped into my head: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I know what we can change—our accessories!

We can add color, movement, lightness, playfulness with our spring accessories.

Bold and vibrant colors are encouraged in spring

I read somewhere on the internet that bold and vibrant colors are encouraged for spring. I love that! It sounds official like a doctor just prescribed that or something.

And it’s not a bad prescription. I think fashion offers us a way to dive into a season to more richly experience the energy of nature. Russ and I walked by the roses one day and saw that they were getting ready to bloom. Twenty-four hours later there were roses in full bloom, some of them the width of a salad plate.

I mean really—how does that happen overnight?

Matching the vibrancy of spring with colorful, playful jewelry

If I’m going to match the vibrancy of spring with spring accessories, I’m going to do it with colorful, playful jewelry. I’ve got just the example to share with you.

As a brand ambassador for Artful Home, I choose two pieces of jewelry at the beginning of a season and use them to demonstrate my fashion tips. For spring I chose to go in a new direction. I decided to explore a contemporary theme.

This Elliptical Tri-Color Earring designed by Victoria Varga reminds me of contemporary stained glass windows or kinetic mobile designs by artist Alexander Calder.

The Multi Circle Cuff Bracelet caught my eye as a nice companion to the earrings. I love the playful geometric shapes. The metal cuff also comes in turquoise, pink, bronze, blue, white, and yellow and molds to your wrist. When it does get warmer, this cuff provides its own ventilation.

I’m taking you to work today to “see” another accessory choice

I was hopeful that it was going to warm up today but it didn’t. When Erin and I met our client Veronica, the topic of discussion was how cold it was. But that didn’t stop us from making cute spring outfits for her May trip to France and Geneva. Note: we did pack layers for her!

She has a great collection of accessories that we’ve purchased over the years, but for the trip, we kept her accessories at a minimum. I didn’t think at the time to photograph them but the spring accessories she’s taking with her include a shiny silver teardrop earring, two stackable rings—one in brushed silver and the other one in textured light silver, one silver CIRCLE link necklace and that’s it. I mention this because that’s another way to change the things you can—wear your lightest metal earrings and necklaces (in both color and weight) that have with a light, effortless feel.

You’ll see some examples in this post about Beauty Bundles.

Layering a cuff over a sleeve

Veronica loved how I’d layered the circle cuff over my jean jacket.

I do too. Again, it’s just playful and that’s what we all want more of in spring.

Pulling out my prescription pad

As your pretend fashion physician, I say pull out some pieces from your jewelry stash that embody the energy of spring. If something looks heavy or serious, think about choosing to adorn yourself with something else, something that has a lighthearted feel. If you shop online or in stores, try to resist going for what you always go for and purchase something that fits nicely into this spring season. Your heart and soul will love it.

I have more topics to share about springtime and accessories. Are there specific questions you’d like me to address? I’d love to hear from you! And do please give us details about some of your springtime treasures!

XO

    Dear Brenda,
Just discovered your blog a few months ago and wanted to tell you how refreshing your content is. I love the idea of Beauty Bundles, and your clothing choices are so much more interesting than the usual basic capsules. Sure, I have simple black pants but I want to wear them with a star piece. I am inspired by how you rework your pieces. I have serious envy for your cream leather Per Se jacket. Thanks again for being fun and inspiring,

Jules, how fun to read your comment! Hardly anything receives more compliments than that Per Se jacket. There’s an upcoming post about it. I had no idea it would be such a great purchase. Your idea about pairing a star piece with your black pants is a great one! You’ve given me another idea about a post I need to finish about star jackets. Thanks for the reminder!!!

I just got a wild idea, Kathysue. It would be fun to go shoe shopping with less than a handful of readers. Everyone’s feet is different. That way we’d get a great sampling! Thanks for you comments and Happy Spring to you!

Love all those pale layers, Brenda. With the denim jacket and then the trench coat on top. I think I need a pair of lightweight, not black or brown boots to help keep my ankles warm this very cool spring, and yet not look like I’m still wearing my winter boots.

Hi Sue, finding these sand colored Lucky booties was great for just this reason. I discovered that Lucky Brand booties with that heel gave me a lift without giving me pain! So I would be on the lookout for them. It started with a cognac pair, then black, and then I found these. All this is my way of saying, Go for it!!!! You won’t regret it! Love your posts, by the way.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a post on summer shorts/outfits for those of us that live in very HOT areas. Currently I am in the Palm Springs area, but have lived also in the south where it is hot and humid. I am already freaking out and wondering “What would Brenda wear when it feels (and sometimes is!) a million degrees outside? Add hot flashes to that and it’s a real conundrum! I NEED THIS BADLY..it’s in the high 90’s here already!

Love the look of the shirt, jean jacket & outer coat with the light jeans & beige booties. I have been fascinated with layering a jean jacket under a coat. Of course, with a high of 50 today in Fargo, we need to layer ;-).
