Anatomy of an Outfit: Celebrating love wearing everything I love

Wear what you love

Putting together an outfit filled with things I love

What do you wear to celebrate the day you met the love of your life? Well, all the things you love, right? It’s that time again and I want to be dressed in pieces that make me feel feminine, cheerful, and openhearted.

I met Russ on January 1, 2002. That electric story is right here if you want to read about that miracle. Since moving to Sonoma we make a point of celebrating that lovely/comical/accidental meeting on January 1st by going to Boon Fly Cafe for brunch. If we’re lucky, we find seats at the bar where seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Otherwise, it’s not uncommon to wait for forty minutes to get a table.

This year I was in Minnesota visiting Dad on New Year’s Day so Russ and I pushed our special date out a week. Where did I start building my outfit? With black lace pants!

Lace pants

Lace pants by Ann Taylor

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if they’d fit since being back home eating way too many traditional sweets. Thankfully, these black lace pants from Ann Taylor (purchased years back) fit with ease. I’d forgotten how warm they are! Sounds contradictory, right? I added my Aquatalia pointy-toed suede booties so I could wear warm socks. Baby, it was cold outside!

Next up was my merlot colored silk ruffled blouse, a J.Crew purchase a couple of years back when I decided I wanted blouses in my wardrobe. I tucked the blouse in and then pulled it out a bit. A ruffled blouse takes an ordinary day and makes it more special.

Jean Jacket

Adding a jean jacket to my girly pieces

I still wanted this to be a Wine Country chic outfit-dressy in a casual way-so I added my dressed down piece: my distressed jean jacket (a TJMaxx purchase). I wanted to add some beauty to my jacket so I went into my brooch department and chose this super sparkly red and pink vintage one: the colors of love!

Next, I looked for the right earrings. I decided to go with my moonstone earrings because I ADORE them and they have movement. Movement is sexier than non-movement. I bought them at Gallery of Jewels. Wait, let me clarify. I had a glass of wine at a trunk show at Gallery of Jewels in San Francisco, saw these moonstones which cost a small fortune and barely thought twice about it. Would I have purchased them without the wine and the, “They’re so great on you!”, cheers from my friends who were there? I think so! It was love at first sight. I didn’t have anything like them and it was time for some serious “pretty” in my jewelry wardrobe.

I wish this photo showed the shades of blue better than it does. They twinkle and engage.

Next came the leopard print jacket. Russ LOVES this jacket and so do I. And the stylist in me LOVES layering outerwear over jean jackets.

To sum up, here are the things I love and managed to put into an outfit:

  • Ruffles
  • Merlot colored anything
  • Leopard print
  • Lace
  • Moonstone earrings
  • Sparkly brooches

Russ and Brenda

The celebrating couple on Christmas Eve

With a forty-five minute wait for a table, we patiently scouted out seats at the bar and when two opened up we snagged them. He enjoyed his pancakes while I enjoyed my omelet. Then Russ said to me, “Do you know there are three women in a row with Louis Vuitton bags over their chairs?”

They had their totes while I had my smaller vintage bag that I got at SAX Consignment. What a guy for spotting a fashion happenstance and sharing it with me! He knows me well.

This mash-up outfit is surprisingly simple

Although putting together an outfit with selected loved pieces could be a mash-up, when I look closer this is a fairly simple ensemble!

If you squint your eyes and look at this, I’m wearing three solid colors: black, merlot, and blue. Pretty classic.

I’m wearing two sparkly accessories. The brooch relates in color to the blouse I’m wearing. The earrings relate in color to the jean jacket I’m wearing. I’m not leaping through any big fashion hoops there.

I’ve added a print to my solid color palette with the leopard print jacket. One classic print with three solid colors. Easy peasy.

The feminine detailing that enhances this love-themed outfit includes ruffles (blouse), lace (pant), and bling (accessories). I think they did that on Sesame Street once.

The color of my fingerless gloves, silk blouse, and lipstick repeat and create a pathway to my face which is my communication center. His eyes are are on me when I say, “I love you!”

Your idea of what to wear to celebrate love may be very different from mine. I want to hear your recipes for love and for outfits! Please share!

XO Forever

I love your outfit, but I love you and Ross MOST! There is nothing in this world more beautiful or feels as good as two people in love living their lives together. Congratulations to you two fortunate ones. It is the best!

BTW, am I the only person in the world who finds LV totes to be so over, so done, so passe? They’re starting to remind me of permed hair and leg warmers.

Oh Brenda, I love you! I just do! Every time I read a new Brenda post it’s like watching the next instalment of a favorite show! Of course I get the added bonus of a style lesson or idea which I love. But, honestly I hear about you and your family and your real life. I love how you weave the stories of your life and the stories of your style together. Not just highlighting your successes but your fears, doubts, insecurities too like us, your readers. You are real, your stories are so relatable, and you share your life and passions with us so honestly. Thank you! And I do just love you!

Your electric story just gave me chills – so romantic and lovely. Your outfit is electric too, but in a nice soft comfortable way. I also love how DH can spot the LV bags on the chairs, how cool! I’m going to drag out that jean jacket again – you’re making me miss it!

It was fun to learn, from reading your electric story, that your outfit recalls some elements of what you were wearing when you first met years ago. What a great story, especially the part about being introverted.
What are the odds that three similar purses and three similar coats would appear at the same time in the same place? If that happened in fiction it would seem improbable.
This week I finished watching The Crown, and was struck by how much was evoked through clothing. That reminded me of a production story about the movie Road to Perdition. For that Depression-era film, they not only made all the clothing, but when modern fabric just didn’t hang right for the costumes, they ordered specially milled cloth like the heavier cloth from the period. I don’t know if you have experience as a consultant for a film or theater production, but your style and storytelling skills suggest that you’d excel at it.

Amy, I’ve seen a documentary on the people who research costumes for period pieces. It has so fascinated me! I wish I could remember the title of this film because you’d probably love it! The person they were following had a huge library of reference books. I could see myself there reading for days. You’re right! I might have just loved that profession!

Adore your ear rings (that wine lead to a great purchase) and the coat! Of course your they support the celebration! Congrats to you both…finding, growing and keeping love alive is a feat (patience, respect, respect and ignoring so many things in our significant other helps the process). My being hard of hearing helps my relationship immensely!

Oh, you’ve got me laughing! Russ is hard of hearing as well. I could see how that could be a good thing! And yes, just this morning I chose to ignore something he does that makes me crazy. It must have flashed across my face as he looked at me because he said, “What’s wrong?” I decided it wasn’t worth mentioning and answered, “Just hungry, I need to eat something.” And it’s all better now! I love your recipe for relationships. Amen, amen, amen!

I love the way that adding a jean jacket to a dressy outfit gives it a casual vibe. You’ve done it perfectly! I’ve never thought of building an outfit out of my most loved pieces, but now you’ve got me thinking!

Wow! The comment Russ made about he purses is something Paul would pick up on too. Those two would get along great. And the fact that you shared your story about when & how you two met with us, just weeks prior to this article, made it even more special. PS I love the layering of the coat over your jean jacket. Way cool!
