Jean Guide for Modern Women: Weekend Jean Outfits

Enjoying the best coffee at Oso on Saturday

Remember when we wore jeans on Saturdays to clean out our garages or pick weeds in the backyard? I remember the weeds, I remember the garages but I can’t say for sure I remember what I was wearing. If I were to guess, I might have reached for jeans that were baggy, torn, or unflattering. You know, jeans I didn’t care about. That was … oh, my gosh, these numbers nearly take my breath away … probably thirty or forty years ago. Whoa! Any hoo, let’s not linger on the past. (Oh my gosh, that was pre-email, pre-Amazon, pre-skinny jeans…pre-Lycra!)

Back to the weekend that just happened, I did spend time cleaning the garage but I was wearing one of my flattering ankle jeans. I didn’t get too dusty or dirty but the crazy, fab thing about jeans is that you can beat them up and they come back for more. (Kind of like living life! Resilience is key!)

But what if next Saturday I wake up thinking about organizing the garage some more but my friend Debra calls and says, “You want to meet me in Petaluma for brunch?” Well, I’m going to say, Yes! I can hear her now. She’ll say, “I’ll meet you at Water Street Bistro. It’s down that alley where Central Market is.” I’m there!

Jeans, white shirts and sneakers

Debra is a pro at looking adorable in Saturday jean outfits. She’s likely to show up in an outfit like this one below, an outfit she wore another time when we met for lunch in Petaluma. Her blouse is so full of feminine details. She’s got it thumb-tucked into her jeans and is wearing a great animal print belt. She carries a vintage frame bag and wears her white sneakers. She is definitely Saturday chic!

I love how A., someone I follow on Instagram (@andattitude), has done something similar below. She wears two different white tops here with two different handbags and two different pairs of sneakers. I love the casual, easy style. It’s so fresh and put together. The handbags and the shoes both look quality and fashionable. Those tennis shoes are not like the Keds I wore every summer growing up on the farm in North Dakota. Wait stop, not going back to that first decade. I’m sticking to this decade, my sixth! But I bet this outfit is as comfortable as what I was wearing when I was a kid.

In this decade, fashion and function go well together in this simple formula of white shirt, jeans, sneakers and not-your-usual Monday-through-Friday-work handbags. It’s the weekend! Let’s have fun!

Jean outfits with sweaters

Another easy weekend jean outfit can focus on sweaters: easy, comfortable, relaxed sweaters.

You’ve seen me a thousand times in my Tippi J.Crew crewneck sweaters, but I’m thinking I need sweaters for the weekend that aren’t as tailored. I need weekend sweaters! The one I’m wearing below is by Lilith and is a mix of linen and cotton. I like the wavy texture. I’d call that a weekend sweater.

Here are more examples, again from Instagram friends. I love that loose weave, sheer gray sweater Claudia (@glamupyourlifestyle) wears at the beach. And Shauna (@chicover50) wears a chunky gray sweater that has weekend written all over it. I love how she’s styled it, giving it a thumb tuck in front. I look at these weekend outfits and see easy style and a shopping list. Note to self: Add in a couple of sweaters just for weekend jean outfits.

I tend to spend the bucks on my work wardrobe and borrow from it to fill in and make weekend outfits but it’s time for me to stop doing that. Weekends with family and friends or me-time staring out the window of a coffee shop is worth having clothes that announce the shift away from work. I think I’ve let my work ethic rule my life and now in my sixth decade, I’m wanting to do more of what I did in my first decade: play with friends. Luckily, I have a great family and I love playing with them too!

I think I’ve built a strong case: my next shopping dollars are going to casual weekend-only pieces. I want to reinforce my desire to slow down, smell the roses, and laugh with friends and family.

Aspirational jean outfits

Okay, I have to leave you with two more images. This first one is an aspirational image I’ve saved off Claudia’s Instagram feed. This is what I’d like to be wearing late on Saturday afternoon when Russ and I head over to Oso and sit at the bar enjoying the best cup of French pressed coffee in Sonoma along with some tasty small dishes to share. We chit chat with the people sitting next to us, usually tourists. It’s becoming a relaxing weekend ritual!

What I’d wear in the late afternoon on Saturday

I love the blouse with the bow and the rolled up jeans and how her pumps relate to the color of her belt. She looks so pretty and so relaxed.

And if Russ and I are staying out really late, maybe catching an 8 p.m. show over at Napa’s Uptown Theater to hear someone like Lucinda Williams, Judy Collins, or Taj Mahal with Keb’ Mo’, I’d love to be wearing something like this ivory sweater jean outfit, styled by Erica Hoida from @fashionedchicstyling. She’s put a pretty lace camisole under the deep V-neck sweater and then given it the old thumb tuck in front. She’s added pretty jewelry and her Prada bag and is looking sex and dreamy. This may be her every day outfit but for me it would be a great Saturday night outfit in the wine country.

My Instagram friends are showing me where I need to focus to make my wardrobe more Saturday friendly. How about you? Are you good about having clothes that take you into Saturday fun times? I’d love to hear what you’re wearing. I’m open to more inspiration!

I love your blog, I need to whisper in your ear that if you are over 60 you are in your 7th decade. Sorry

Oh my gosh, I am cracking up! Thanks for whispering that in my ear. Now I’m like a girl in church sitting next to my best friend and I can’t stop laughing out loud. I think I’d better slip out the side door! Too funny!

I really love the look of those unique white shirts/blouses with jeans. I’ve been tempted by these shirts before — some are lacy, embroidered, or have other interesting details like poet sleeves — but I’ve never figured out how to wear them without looking too fussy or costume-ish . Pairing them with jeans AND sneakers is genius! Thanks for the tip.

You are so welcome! This justifies my time spent on Instagram–finding great examples of things I want to talk to you all about! They are inspiring me too. I got a client into a modern sneaker last year and I swear it was life-changing. She was walking on clouds all summer long in her bright white skater sneakers.

It makes me sad to see white tops and jeans because I do not wear white well. I follow the rule about no white whiter than your teeth. White shirts are such a classic and classy option but I cannot and do not do them. Guess the sweater choice is a better one for me. AND BTW – why do manufacturers only make blouses in white white and not a softer ecru or off white? They are impossible to find.

Marcia, I’ve heard of that rule too but I’ve slacked off a bit on it. I actually have found softer whites! You’re right, not nearly as available as white whites. How about a blue blouse like Claudia was wearing? Swap the white for one of your great colors. And yes, sweaters, they’re on my radar too!

I love the idea of focusing on a stunning weekend sweater especially one (like Erica’s feminine look) where I can wear one of my Hanro camisoles that I’ve collected over the years. Showing some pretty lace with the grounding of denim–seems to mirror the subtle complexities of my 7th decade. I had not heard of Marcia’s white rule. Now I’m pondering the wisdom of that guide. Being a fan of Black and White…I’d not give up white easily. Thanks again Brenda, for beautiful examples of styling ideas for a favorite day of the week.

Oh, Hanro lace camisoles! Lucky girl! Yes, when I saw this picture I just had to share it. I love the soft/tough mix. I had heard that rule early in my career and stood true to it. But now I have different thoughts on it. If it’s a striking “miss” then of course, I’d not choose it but I love the crispness of white shirts and how they can make an outfit look really fresh and modern. If you can find other sources of white besides stark white, I’d love that too. One of my favorite “white” shirts is a soft white. Everything about it is soft. I think I could sleep in it! And thanks to Lana, I now realize that this is my 7th decade. I’ve had to adjust my head a bit but heh, seven is a lucky number, right? Cheers to all of us in our 7th decade! Woo hoo!

Brenda, I’ve loved your jeans series. I think this is my favorite of the bunch. BTW, you are lookin’ good, girl. Lovely self-care on your part. The spiky hair — such a good look for you, too.

Ann, I wish you could see the spiky hair right now. It’s actually a little too out of hand! It has a mind of its own. Thanks for the props! So glad you’re enjoying this series. I appreciate hearing from you!

I am guilty of trying to use items I wear at work in my weekend outfits. I spend more of my shopping fun tickets (money) on work clothing. I have tended to treat them as too precious for week end wear and regret that decision. I love the pictures in this series but shy away from bows or lace as a general rule. I am petite and look either juvenile or like I am in hot pursuit of days gone by. That maybe an issue I have to work on! Thank you for the series! Wonder ideas and enjoyable to read!

Thanks for your comments, Kathy. Writing this particular blog post has made me take a serious dive into my own habits. It’s reinforcing to me to hear you talk about it too! Substitute the tops with lace or bows for more tailored looks. I think you’ll achieve your sweet spot. This year blouses are insanely diverse so there’s lots to choose from. Cheers!!

Thanks, Brenda. I love your jeans series. Since I don’t work, these outfits are perfect for me seven days a week. I love all the looks, but especially the ones with sneakers (my favorite shoes).

I’m so glad you’re liking this series! And I love your enthusiasm for sneakers. I’m going to have to try some on this season and update my shoe situation. Sneakers are so strong in fashion. They can’t be ignored. And feet that have special needs (like mine) actually will be happy about this! Thanks for checking in!

Thanks Brenda. Like Marcia I can ‘t wear white (without someone calling an ambulance) and like Cathy I don’t have to dress for work so I use your fabulous inspiration for 7-day-a-week outfits. I’m loving the jean series, and have only one tiny misgiving about these looks. The thumb tuck looks brilliant with a light-weight blouse, but in a sweater (especially Shauna’s bulky one) it just looks careless to me, like it got caught up when the pants were done up. For those of us with protruding bellies, I imagine it would draw attention to a feature we’d rather people didn’t notice.

Otherwise, sneakers – yes! so comfortable and so diverse these days. I have a pair of skate shoes I adore, as well as several pairs of soft sneakers in different colours. They are my go-to weekend shoes.

Love your advice – I so needed to hear it. These looks are so fun and fresh, you look way younger than your age, but in a GOOD WAY.

I RECENTLY splurged on a great pair of boyfriend jeans from Anthropologie with vintage patches. Then I bought some embroidered jean jackets. I feel like a million dollars. And I’m 60!

I’m jumping up and down! That is so great! You’re proving that you can wear something once, early in life, and enjoy it a second time around. I bet you look like a million bucks as well. Thanks for sharing, Brenda!
