Sneakers are the new ballet flats and you need a pair!

Sneakers look modern

Sneakers at play

When the sneaker trend arrived, I wasn’t so sure about it’s role in the shoe wardrobe of a 55 or older person. Was this another trend for the young people? I remember a year or two ago when I got my first sixty-year-old client into a white sneaker for summer. It seemed so out there for her “under the radar” style but I saw the look in her eye when she tried them on. She looked down at her feet there on the floor of the Nordstrom shoe department in Corte Madera and she was smitten.

That slip-on white sneaker of hers changed her wardrobe and changed her life, as God is my witness. She had a bounce in her step that wasn’t there when she wore her ballet flats. In her ballet flats she looked cautious and quiet and under the radar. In her white sneakers she was more sassy, unpredictable (in a good way), vibrant, youthful, and modern. She never looked stodgy, but by comparison, this new style of footwear was so uplifting. Imagine looking refreshed like getting a face lift, or coming back from luxurious month in Paris, or having the best sex in your life. Well, that’s the glow she wore in these shoes!

When this year came around, we added a couple of more pairs of sneakers to her wardrobe. This style in all the pictures you’ll see here are usually labeled sneakers but sometimes they’re referred to as skaters as well. I was so inspired by how this shoe style updated her wardrobe and her look that I took to them as well.

They’re so comfortable! This summer I’ve hardly worn sandals. I’ve especially not worn heeled sandals. I’m in sneakers most days. I thought they may be hot but they’re not. With new technology, sneakers may look heavy but be light as a feather. Those cute ones in the opening photo that I’m wearing with my orange pants are so lightweight. They’re like the whipped cream that gets added to the butterscotch pudding at Central Market in Petaluma. Irresistible!

Sneakers are my go-to work shoes

Wearing sneakers to work

This sneaker style I’m wearing above is from Junction Shoes in San Anselmo. Go there and see Karen for lightweight, comfortable stylish shoes. My pair are by a company called Wellfeat. I’m into the second year with them now and they are still going strong. I LOVE the lift they give me. Since I’m not wearing heels anymore, these sneakers with thick soles make me feel kind of sexy even while being sporty. I guess it’s because I’m looking taller in them.

Here are a few examples of sneakers in action. The pair above are worn by Annie, a new person I met in Sonoma through my friend, Valerie. She was wearing these sneakers with the white edge and the big leather bow with a flirty long skirt.

Keeping your feet happy all day

Smartwool sneaker socks

Smartwool half socks will keep your feet cool

A client gave me the best tip this summer. She told me to try Smartwool Secret Sleuth socks to wear inside my sneakers. She found other brands would slip off her heels but not these. They’re 60% Wool, 39% Nylon, and 1% Elastane. They are my new best friend. The only problem is if you throw them in the dryer, the dryer may eat one or two during the cycle. I stocked up. I went to Amazon and found them there. My client had gotten hers at R.E.I.

Sneakers that act as neutral flats

I was just talking to my shoe man, Adam, who helps me with my clients’ shoe needs at Nordstrom.

I love talking to him. He’s such a wealth of product knowledge and a shoe historian. I was asking him about sneakers moving forward. And he made his sneaker point brilliantly. “Brenda,” he said, “Sneakers are all year round shoes. Think of them as the new ballet flat. They work in every wardrobe.”

Remember when skinny jeans came out? They appealed to the fashion forward crowd. Then they became mainstream. That’s how I see the sneaker look. At first it was groundbreaking to wear a sneaker with skirts, dresses, or dressy outfits. Now it’s mainstream. No matter what our age is, we’re embracing this trend. And what better trend to consider than one that is so good for feet that complain as they get older?

Sneaker Samples

Here are a few examples of some sneakers that I can see going into the fall shoe season. Some are more classic looking and others are more rambunctious. Your choice! Let’s start with the simpler styles, sneakers that are neutral and could go with so many things.

Why don’t you include links to the items you feature? I went on Zappos and found ONE pair of shoes that look a bit like these — using the word “sneakers” in the search just gets you hundreds of lace-up pairs. I would love to find a pair like your perforated ones or Annie’s ones with bows. Frankly, links to cool styles is my main reason for reading fashion blogs!

Sorry, Nomi. I was leaving on a vacation to see my Dad and was trying to get most of this set up and I thought of links for each one but it was daunting! However, I went on Nordstrom.com for nearly all of these if not all of them. So if you want to look them up, start there. Look for sneakers and skaters.

I have been wearing Merrill ‘ Loreli ‘ zip up ones for the past couple years. Sooo comfy and people always say how they like my shoes. I keep an extra new pair in the closet – just in case- . I hate when a favourite item is discontinued. However, I don’t think I will ever give up my ballet flats or short boots. P.s. the zippers are so much better for the fingers that argue back.

Love your post (as usual) and have been really liking those sneakers you wear. I was in SAX earlier this week and found a wonderful pair of Diana Slavin culottes which were calling for some good sneaks. I did find a very similar style by Summit on the Nordstrom website. They are called “Braxton.”

I’m so glad I found you, because I’ve settled into a look that hasn’t felt very unique. When younger I mixed vintage clothes, pins, etc. and somehow got out of that habit. You’ve reactivated my creativity!

    Thanks!

I’m intrigued but at the pre contemplative stage of change. I do love the ones Annie is wearing with the bows but on her not me necessarily. Love your ardent arguments for embracing the trend and will think about it, window shop and revisit this post probably 10 times before making a decision!

Good enough, Kathy, good enough! I know I am making a hard sell but of course, they won’t be for everyone. I just can’t think of one trend that I’ve seen be so effective with the over 55 crowd. So just had to give this one a little push!

OH yes, do try them. You could go through a shoe department and just lift every sneaker/slip-on/skater shoe up and get a feel for the weight of them. Honestly, sometimes I’m just blown away by how lightweight they can be. A pair of these would broaden your shoe options and could be fun, fun, fun! Good luck!

I found great black sneaker-type Skechers in NYC at Christmas – they are so comfortable that they’ve become my go-to shoes for when I visit a town (except in Summer, these ones are slightly too warm). And I found lovely artisanal two-tone sneakers in Helsinki this summer, black and turquoise and light as a feather. However, I’m keeping my platform sandals from Clarks too!

I have two pairs of keds mules that are my go to sneaker, one in red, my favorite, and the other in a linen color with a thicker sole. I am thinking of a pair of white chucks, the newer look with the elastic heel. I have very narrow heels and ordinary sneakers, or van like shoes go up and down on my heels. I am wondering if a pair of the socks you posted would prevent that. Narrow feel are a bear to fit in a shoe. The only skinny part on my body are my hands and feet, go figure, LOL
By the way love you in all the color, one of my favorites to date on you.

Kathysue, a client of mine who needs to fill out a sneaker more layers the SmartWool sleuth socks to get better fit. But I do thing the elastic backs are fabulous for people with narrow heels. Last year I found an updated “ballet” flat with a thicker rubber sole for a client of mine with this problem. It was by Prada although I’m sure it would come in lower priced lines as well. The elastic across the back was a miracle worker.

I have ventured into the sneaker look too. I am especially fond of the grey velvet ones with satin laces that. Found on Zappos recently. That said, I ordered one of those slip ons with platform soles and a large bow earlier this summer. I thought they were cute at first glance but they wieghed a ton and looked enormous, as if I were wearing boats on my feet! Back they went.

Great post!! I have never been a fan of lace-up sneakers. I just don’t like the laces flopping around. These slip-on’s are perfect to dress up or down. Love that you paired them with a dressier wide-leg pant. So refreshing! I have purchase several pairs of Sperry perforated slip-on’s and they are so comfortable. Thanks for the tip on the Smartwool half sock. I will definitely be ordering a few pair since they are available in a variety colors from Amazon.

Yes, that’s the whole “new” thing: wearing sneakers with dresses or dressier pants. It’s not something I can do willy nilly yet but I have enjoyed the times when I have done that. They’re so perfect for when I’m doing all that running around in stores with clients. So comfortable but I still want to look professional. Glad you’re enjoying your Sperrys!

Brenda, I’m so happy to see this post. I’ve been wearing lace-up sneakers almost exclusively for about 18 months due to a major foot injury. At first I was devastated, but finally decided to adjust to reality. I had thought sneakers were only for the very young, but have now adapted my wardrobe to go with them. Guess what? The way I now dress is incredibly more creative, hip and comfortable. I get lots of compliments from people who never commented before.

Last night I went to dinner at an upscale French restaurant here in Manhattan. I wore a navy Eileen Fisher outfit (boat neck top and slim ankle pants) with a gorgeous red, white and blue French scarf and my black New Balance 990’s. We got one of the best tables in the house and wonderful service, and I had a terrific time. I walked home after dinner in comfort!

It’s never too late to start taking good care of your feet!

True-to-size and comfortable right out of the box. Didn’t need one bit of breaking in. Love that they’re leather and no seams to rub against your foot. I’m considering purchasing them in black also.

Last week I was picking up paper goods at Target, so of course I had to see what else they had… On my way to the home goods dept I spotted a fabulous pair of black boucle with sequins platform slip ons by DV for just $29.00. Look similar to some I’ve seen from my favorite stuart Weitzman. I have narrow, bony feet and these will be great since my orthotic slips right in. Cheap way to try a new trend before you splurge for the real deal 🙂

Mary, that’s an excellent bit of advice right there. And you bring up another great plus for sneakers: orthotics fit! Boy, for years I’ve worked with clients wearing orthotics and it’s been hard, hard, hard, but not now!

Brenda thank you for the great advice with the Smart Wool socks- I have so many pairs of useless liners. I told my mom once, ” The only way these wretched things will stay up is if I put a thumb tack in my heel.”
I put on the Smart Scoks this morning and I am thrilled. Thank you. ( the useless ones make great dust cloths!)

I am so with you on this! I got rid of my useless ones after I found these. Didn’t think to repurpose them into dust clothes. I guess you know who does not do the housecleaning in our house! Or at least not a lot of it!

I have no idea how I missed this post – I love love love your personal style (reminds me of my mom) and I NEED to know the deets on Annie’s bow sneaks, if you have them (if you already shared to another person who commented just share the link – at 52 I feel too old {lazy} to read through 71 comments!!!)

You make me laugh! Well, even though I must say that the comments from these ladies are often the best part of the blog I will save you that time…this time! I don’t have the deets! That was quick, right? I know she bought them at Neiman’s but I do not know the brand. Was in the shoe department at Nordstrom this week and AGL has a slip on shoe that has a side bow. You might check that one out!
